A brief history

The inception of the idea that led to the construction and subsequent development of the Balaji Temple, Nagpur lay in installation of the Vel, the chief weapon of Lord Muruga, in a small temple in the Modhibag Railway Colony of Nagpur by the local Tamilians. However, the location of the temple soon became a roadblock for various land-based issues in the city. It was then decided that a larger temple be built with the idols of Lord Muruga, Valli and Deivanai in it. This temple, following its consecration in 1975, was named Balaji Temple; in the year 2005, a few more deities were installed after adding an additional tower to the existing building.

Famous Festivals at the Temple

  • Lord Balaji Festival – This begins fifteen days before the Chitra Purnima and is characterized by numerous ‘pujas’ during the 14 days after the first day when a special flag hoisting is done to mark the beginning of this stellar event.
  • Venaikappu – Rituals consist of applying butter on the Lord’s idol.
