Nagpur MIHAN

MIHAN expanded as Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur is an extensive project carried for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur. The basic aim behind the project is to convert the Airport into a major cargo hub with railway and road transportation connectivity. The project consists of two parts:

Firstly, Conversion of a Domestic Airport into an international passenger and cargo hub airport Secondly, encompassing total area of more than 2,000 Hectares, a special economic zone is going to build  on the southern end of Nagpur. The area has been supposed to developed into commercial area inhabitated by  I.T. industries, gems and jewellery, garments, electronic goods, pharmaceuticals, processed foods and any other type of industries. 

The Government of Maharashtra has also organized several projects to meet the rail, road, power supply to MIHAN. Indian Railway has planned to established new station in nearby location to MIHAN in order to connect the cargo hub with rail network. To meet the manpower demand, 43 new Engineering Colleges has been approved by the Nagpur University for the establishment in and around Nagpur.

Mihan involves the biggest economic investment in India under the share of State government's Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Maharastra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Along with the central and state authority investment, this project is also financed by several banks under loan of INR 3,000 million.

Mihan covers total area of 4354 Hectares of land in Nagpur. For the accomplishment of MIHAN project, Maharashtra Government has establishment a separate body by the name of Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). MIHAN is considered the largest project in Indian aviation industry, aimed at providing service to about 14 million passengers and has the ability to handle 0.87 million tons of cargo. It has been estimated that the big project required huge amount of revenue for its accomplishment with an estimated amount of 2581 crores rupees (by year 2035) and is expected to generate revenues of 5280 crores rupees.

MIHAN Socio-Economic Impact

An estimated figure of 12 million of population will get employed through project including both direct and indirect ways. MIHAN aims at providing employment to the nearby population and aimed at the developed of underdeveloped area of Vidharbha. To keep environment free from any type of pollution half a million trees has been decided to be planted and no polluting industries are allowed to be built in the region under MIHAN project covering areas.  For the project Singapore Changi Airport has been selected as consultant.
