Raman Science Centre

In Nagpur, Raman science centre is a centre that is very interactive and affiliated with Nehru Science Centre of Mumbai. Development of this centre was for promotion of scientific attitude and growth of technology and science and it has applications in human welfare and industry and holding exhibitions of science. The name of this science centre was established on the name of Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman who is a very famous physicist and winner of a Nobel Prize.

The inauguration of this centre was on March 7, 1992 and on January 5, 1997 the planetarium took start in this centre. The location of this science centre is opposite to the Gandhi Sagar Lake that is the Nagpur’s heart. There was a record of 307074 numbers of visitors to this centre from 1 April, 2006 to 31 March, 2007. There is a largest and great network of museums and science centres called NCSM (National Council of Science Museums) and this centre is also a part of the council which is under one administrative umbrella of the world. This centre was rated as regional level by NCSM and the floor area of this centre is 4333 squares metres.

Activities in Raman Science Centre

There are various activities and programs that are carried out in this centre for the spread of knowledge of technology and science among the public. An award called Green Finger award is given by this centre together with NGO Hirwai for creating awareness among school children about the environment. In the year 2007, during the month of August, a gallery of communication and information technology was opened. In this gallery, it was declared by Madhavan Nair who was chairman that astronauts will be sent in space by India by the year 2015.
  • Currently there are 45 different and interactive galleries in this centre like planetarium of 133 seats, Animal Park that is prehistoric, fun science and many more.
  • There are also film shows of science, lectures of science and 3-D shows of science that are held in this centre. Some activities are also organized like watching planet, celestial phenomena for other citizens.
  • One can spend whole day in this centre while playing with press lever, roll balls, turn wheels, pressing buttons, pull strings, looking through peepholes to see work of science and enjoy.
So, in Raman science Centre, Nagpur, science has become an experience more than a subject. This centre is opened throughout the year leaving Diwali and Holy festivals.

In summer season from March month to October month, its timings are from 11:30 AM in the morning to 7:00 PM in the evening. And in the winter season, its timings are from 10:30 am in the morning to 6:00 PM in the evening.

Its special shows include daily 4 shows of Planetarium, 4 shows of 3-D and sound and light show of Animal Park is shown on every 3 days of week that are Friday, Sunday and Wednesday after Sunset. Some shows like 3-D and Planetarium can also be specially arranged for group of school having 100 students or more.
