Vidharba Stadium

The main stadium for cricket in Nagpur is the ground developed by the Vidharba Cricket Association (VCA). It is associated with central Zone and is commonly known as VCA ground. It has already completed more than four decades of existence. The legacy of this stadium dates back to 1960’s. The first match was played on this ground on 3 October 1969. Recently the old stadium has been replaced by a new one with all new world class modern amenities. There is another stadium located in the city of Rajnandgaon. It is located 125Km away from Nagpur. It is known as Jayanti stadium.

The renowned Vidharba cricket association was launched in its current state in November 2008. The first match to be played on this newly developed ground was between India and Australia. It was a one day international which India won. It has capacity of 45000, with facilities like flood lights. Apart from being a popular venue for international matches it is also a home ground for Vidharba team of Ranji trophy and central zone in Duleep Trophy.

The venue at which this stadium is located is Jamtha. It is spread over an area of 33 acres (130000m2).  It is located 16 Km away from Nagpur on the Nagpur – Hyderabad National highway 7. The architect behind the creation of this marvel was Shashi Prabhu. It has many world class facilities like gymnasium, lunch hall etc. Towards the southern end it has exquisite air conditioned facilities. It also has thirty eight corporate boxes with luxurious services. Not only the players but also ICC officials, Umpires and other dignitaries are given special attention. The media people covering the match are also provided with a media box with all the modern technical facilities so that any glitch occurring can be easily dealt with.

This stadium has four stands in it. The eastern stand and the western stand are two tier stands which are open aired. The northern stand which is three tired has in it the commercial box, presidential room, secretary box, security central and board room. The southern stand is also three tired. Some of the major attractions of this stand include players pavilion, media room, Gymnasium for players etc. This stadium has the ability to host the game at any time of the day which means it can host day night matches as well as day games. This arena is covered so that spectators can enjoy the matches without worrying about the scorching heat of the city. It has ample number of chairs so that all the fans can sit comfortably. The chairs used are of bucket seat type. It has long space for spectators to take a stroll while enjoying the game. It has a spacious lounge towards the exterior of dressing room.

Apart from sporting amenities the recreational facilities are also great which includes a massive club houses which can accommodate three full fledged teams in it. It has all the elements of a modern, luxurious ground like a huge swimming pool in accordance with the standards specified by Olympic authorities, Two restaurants, gym. From players to officials to media persons all consider this ground to be one of the best grounds in our country. The stadium is said to be a baby of Shashank Manohar (former BCCI president). The corporate behind the construction of this ground is Shapoorji Pallonji & Co, who had also constructed the Brabourne stadium several decades back.
